Summary

This Element focuses on the question of discounting books, which has been and still is an open-ended debate in the book industry. It will look at one key event called the 'Book War' (1906), which became the result of a dispute between The Times Book Club and the Publishers' Association, who had just bought the Net Book Agreement into use six years earlier. Through archival research, the opinions and contributions of authors, publishers and booksellers have been located and analysed to reveal their views on the question of discounting during what was the first time that the Net Book Agreement was challenged.
