Open access publishing

Funder policies and mandates

Research funders worldwide are increasingly adopting policies that guarantee the work they support is freely available to the public. These policies vary, and researchers should review their grant terms carefully to understand any specific compliance requirements.

For more information on public access mandates and policies adopted by governments, research funders, and institutions, see:

  • Jisc Open Policy Funder : Allows you to search by funder name or country keyword.
  • ROARMAP : Allows you to search by multiple fields, including by country and type of institution.

Many funders now help researchers make their work openly available by covering the costs involved for publishing research Gold Open Access (Gold OA), so that the final ‘Version of Record’ of an article, which has undergone peer review, editorial quality control, and production, can be read and reused by everyone.

When Gold OA isn’t an option, depositing an earlier version in a trusted repository remains an alternative route to public access. Our progressive Green Open Access Policy is designed to satisfy virtually all funder requirements in these situations.

We welcome ongoing dialogue with funders about how we can further develop policies, processes, and communications to best support their missions and stewardship for the research outputs they fund. We welcome emails to openresearch@cambridge.org. Please address your message to the Open Policy Development team.
