Hegel on Freedom and Ethical Life

Expected online publication date:  09 November 2026

Gerad Gentry
Affiliation:
Baylor University

Summary

Hegel on Freedom and Ethical Life argues that Hegel's idea of freedom inherits and expands on key features of the Kantian principle of the autonomy of the will and the inner conditions of freedom, along with an Aristotelian principle of action and human flourishing, altering both through the broadly skeptical method informed by Sextus Empiricus, in a way that facilitates a compelling alternative in the current metaethical landscape and a unique range of insights about the nature of action, rational agency, and the ethical life. This work thus lays out the core features of Hegel's constitutivism and its relative strengths, setting it in helpful contrast with constructivist (e.g., Rawls, Korsgaard, Bagnoli) notions of action and rational agency. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
