Print Disabilities and Disabled Reading Experiences

Expected online publication date:  07 January 2027

Ellen Forget
Affiliation:
University of Alberta

Summary

Working at the intersection of book history, reading studies, and disability studies, this Element uses interviews with disabled readers to describe how print disabilities affect reading experiences. The author argues that all forms of reading-including visual, aural, and tactile-are valid, despite the difference in sensory input. They also argue that all book forms-including print, ebook, audiobook, braille, comics, picture books, and more-all count as books that can be read, and why it matters that they count and are considered equally in reading studies. The Element considers disabled experiences of reading in different forms, reading communities, accessibility of book formats, why these topics matter to disabled readers, and why they should matter to nondisabled readers, publishing professionals, and bookish scholars.
