The current understanding of periodic transonic flow isreviewed briefly. The effects of boundary-layertransition, non-adiabatic wall conditions andmodifications to the aerofoil surface geometry atthe shock interactions on periodic transonic floware discussed. Through the methods presented, it isproposed that the frequency of periodic motion canbe predicted with reasonable accuracy, but there arelimitations on the prediction of buffet boundariesassociated with periodic transonic flows. Severalmethods have been proposed by which the periodicmotion may be virtually eliminated, most relevantlyby altering the position of transition fix, contouring the aerofoils surface or adding a poroussurface and a cavity in the region of shockinteraction. In addition, it has been shown thatheat transfer can have a significant effect onbuffet.
