With Dušan Coufal’s article below, the Austrian History Yearbook introduces a new feature. In this and subsequent Primary Source in Context publications, we pair a research article written for scholars in the field with a primary source document (translated and annotated) that will allow students and nonspecialists to appreciate and engage with the research claims in the article. The annotations provide background on persons, places, concepts, and dates that open the field more broadly to newcomers. For this inaugural experiment, we have selected Coufal’s article because it so expertly performs a close reading of a document and reveals the creativity and imagination that such a reading can elicit.
The Austrian History Yearbook welcomes submissions for similar primary source-based research articles to be featured as Primary Source in Context for future editions. Please submit article manuscripts to ahy@umn.edu and consult multimediafluids.uam.elogim.com/core/journals/austrian-history-yearbook for information on submission guidelines.
