Abstract

In her book Le prophète rouge, Julie Pagis offers a critical re-examination of the sociological concept of charisma. She highlights its eminently relational dimension—as a co-production between leader and followers—by analyzing, in particular, the role played by gender relations. This article aims to enrich Pagis’s study by highlighting the theological matrix of the structures of authority at work and by calling for a more thorough justification of the rejection of psychoanalytic interpretation, despite the actors’ regularly referring to it.
