This Theme Section of IJTAHC presents summaries of six policy briefs that address scaling up of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Africa. The methods used to develop the policy briefs are described in the Section Editorial. Each summary assesses the problem, potential policy options to address the problem, and strategies for implementing those options.
These policy briefs were prepared as part of an initiative of the Evidence-Informed Policy Network (EVIPNet) Africa initiative (www.evipnet.org/php/index.php). EVIPNet promotes the systematic use of research evidence to inform health policy making in low- and middle-income countries through partnerships at the country level between policy makers, researchers, and civil society. EVIPNet country teams are coordinated regionally and globally. EVIPNet Africa currently includes the following countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Zambia, and the Regional East African Community Health (REACH) Policy Initiative (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda).
Technical and financial support for the preparation of these policy briefs was provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), McMaster University (Canada), and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Preparation of the policy briefs was coordinated and facilitated by Prof. John Lavis (McMaster University, Canada), with support by Dr. Ulysses Panisset (WHO, Research Policy & Cooperation), Dr. Fabio Zicker (WHO, Tropical Diseases Research), and Dr. Issa Sanou (WHO, Regional Office for Africa).
