The petitioners sought to introduce a series of sandstone marker slabs into the area reserved for burial of cremated remains, in order to ensure that future memorials and burials had appropriately sized bases and to avoid the problem of overlapping bases. Significant and time-consuming pastoral problems had previously been caused by installations of oversize memorials. The Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) opposed the petition, arguing that the bases would look unusual, although they would not harm the aesthetic significance of the churchyard, and that the pastoral problem could be addressed by clear instructions to memorial masons about the required dimensions for the bases. Weighing the experience of the DAC against the pastoral and practical problems experienced by the petitioners, the chancellor found that the markers were the most effective way to manage the problem, and a faculty was issued accordingly.
