This book is based essentially on a wide-ranging bibliography on the history of Latin American banking, complemented by the international literature on the comparative history of banking. Also important has been the consultation of nineteenth-century pamphlet literature, bank reports and contemporary press articles, some now digitized, but most to be found in many libraries. In addition, over the years I have consulted a good number of existing historical archives of Latin American banks which I have previously described in my article: “Banking History and Archives in Latin America,” Business History Review, Vol. 82, Harvard University, 2008, pp. 585–602. The consultation of documents and papers in the historical archives of the Banco Nacional de México, the Banco de la Nación de Argentina and the Banco do Brasil has been especially useful for this book, as can be seen in the footnotes. For digital information on classic books and documents of old banks in Latin America and elsewhere, an excellent source is the Hathi Trust library collection, www.hathitrust.org/. In addition there is a wealth of information on international banking in European historical banking archives that offer fundamental information on the international finance of Latin America in the long run. Many of the references to these sources can be consulted at our specialized webpage, with detailed information on archives, historical statistics and a bibliography on Latin American banking history: https://hbancaria.org/.
