Abstract

Abstract

This article examines three works by Verónica Gerber Bicecci through the visual and sonic dimensions of silence. It brings contemporary sound studies—particularly the work of Ana María Ochoa Gautier, David Toop, and Jean-Luc Nancy—into dialogue with a critical redefinition of collage informed by Freya Gowrley’s recent Fragmentary Forms (2024). Rather than approaching collage as a medium or genre, the article understands it as a practice of material thinking that unsettles the canonical genealogy of cubist papier collé and emerges instead as a transhistorical and transmedial form of assemblage. Its central proposition is that silence can be understood as active matter: an interstitial zone that opens perception and allows quotations, cuts, and residues to acquire agency. Tracing a visual series of silence across Gerber Bicecci’s work, the article analyzes two moments in which silence is depatriarchalized by inhabiting other materials: Mujeres polilla (2018) and otro día… (poemas sintéticos) (2023). In both works, acetone, dust, and residue activate a poetics of blurring that disrupts the oppositions between form and content and between the sayable and the unsayable. The article concludes with an analysis of Centón pétreo (2021), in which a collage of fragmented visual and literary quotations dramatizes a silence that reverberates. In each case, collage makes perceptible a form of silence that exceeds its conventional definition and operates as a fracture of form: a material and discursive cut that challenges gender regimes, archival politics, and established modes of listening. Silence thus becomes an undisciplined act that, through its minimal and fragmentary materiality, rehearses other forms of political imagination.
