This is a collection of some thirteen short biographies of leaders and theologians of the Church of England since the Reformation, written for the most part by established scholars, and preceded by a brief scene-setting chapter by Gerald Bray. As the Introduction admits, ‘Evangelicals predominate’ (p. 12), and the purpose of the book is evidently to serve theological and ecclesiological aims rather than strictly scholarly ones. The standard of contributions is a little uneven, if generally high. Highlights include Martin Wellings on Susanna Wesley, Mark Smith on William Wilberforce, John Wolffe on Lord Shaftesbury, and Michael Ward on C. S. Lewis. Little is presented here that is not available at greater length elsewhere, but the book will be a useful resource for students approaching English church history for the first time.
