Abstract

Abstract

The scientific study of Nahuatl lyrical literature contained in Novohispanic manuscripts, such as Cantares mexicanos and Romances de los señores de la Nueva España, has focused on its translation, aesthetics, themes, and interpretation. This has led to a deeper understanding of Mexica literary form and style, as well as their unique way of perceiving the world in relation to their political and religious vision. This study proposes an ethnohistorical-gastronomic approach to the edible elements mentioned in the cantares for the study and interpretation of their ideological content, paying special attention to aspects such as culinary transformation, shared consumption, symbolism, and meaning. An inventory of the edible components from various classes, genres, and species is established, and the presence of culinary procedures, therapeutic uses, and mythical-religious meanings that complement the interpretation of the underlying discourse in the cantares is identified. To achieve this, the manuscripts were thoroughly reviewed, new translations were introduced, and coincidences were cross-checked with contemporary chronicles and herbal recipe books. The contribution of this work lies in the novel application of an approach whose results highlight the previously unstudied feature of the presence of edible elements in Nahuatl lyrical literature, opening new avenues for the reading and interpretation—beyond the literary and formal scope—of other early Novohispanic literary documents.
