The International Centre for Diffraction Data® (ICDD®) is a non-profit scientific organization dedicated to collecting, editing, publishing, and distributing powder diffraction data for the identification of crystalline materials. One component of ICDD is to host an Annual Meeting where members, via task groups and subcommittees, contribute to improving the Powder Diffraction File™, and recommend enhancements in the analyses methods, and the elected Board of Directors reports to the membership. This year's meeting was special in that the ICDD is celebrating the 75th anniversary of ICDD.
The ICDD had a productive 2016 Spring Meetings Week from March 14th to 18th, 2016. Fifty-nine of the 317 ICDD's Members attended the Meetings and represented 16 countries.
On Tuesday morning, everyone enjoyed the plenary talks by Tim Fawcett, GLOBAL MATERIALS ANALYSIS – WHAT CUSTOMERS WANT?; T. N. Guru Row, EXOTIC INTERMOLECULAR INTERACTIONS: A CHARGE DENSITY BASED ANALYSIS; Ihor Zavaliy, NOVEL MG-BASED COMPOUNDS, ALLOYS AND COMPOSITES AS EFFECTIVE HYDROGEN STORAGE MATERIALS; and Chris Gilmore, HOW CLUSTER ANALYSIS CAN MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER.
This year's Poster Session and Reception took place at the Concordville Inn Gold Ballroom, located in Concordville, PA. There were a total of 37 posters. Seventeen ICDD employees authored or coauthored a poster. Congratulations to Aderemi Babatunde Alabi for his third place poster “SYNTHESIS AND PHASE IDENTIFICATION OF METAL OXIDES”, Shifeng Jin for his second place poster “IN-SITU PXRD STRUCTURE SOLUTION OF SOME FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS”, and Charlene Greenwood for her first place win for her poster “FRACTURE PREDICTIVE MODEL BASED ON BONE QUALITY ASSESSED USING X-RAY DIFFRACTION”. Please see the ICDD website http://www.icdd.com/profile/march16-poster.htm for all the Plenary and Poster Session abstracts and other information on the ICDD Spring Meetings. Wednesday meetings were well attended, with meetings of the many ICDD subcommittees including PDF Editorial Staff Subcommittee, Scholarship, X-ray Diffraction Methods, X-ray Fluorescence Subcommittee, Metals & Alloys, Micro and Meso, Education, Ceramics, Polymers, Minerals, Electron Diffraction, Synchrotron & Neutron Scattering Methods, Non-Ambient Diffraction, and Organic & Pharmaceutical Subcommittee.
All the week's work came together with the Technical Committee Meeting, overseen by Matteo Leoni. There were reports from the Regional Co-chairs, and motions from the various subcommittees. These directives ultimately make the ICDD database better and add functionality for our customers.
During the Annual Members Meeting on Thursday afternoon, ICDD Chairman, Scott Misture, announced the following awards: the 2016 McMurdie Award was given posthumously to Ann Sabina, to recognize her many distinguished contributions over nearly five decades to the quality, content, coverage, and usefulness of the Powder Diffraction File™, in particular, the Minerals Subfile. Friend and colleague, Andy Roberts, accepted on behalf of the Sabina family. The title of Distinguished Fellow was granted to two ICDD members honoring their long and meritorious service to the ICDD. They are – Raymond Goehner, honoring his three decades of contributions as a Subcommittee and Committee Chair, North American Regional Co-chair, and at the Board level, Director-at-large and Vice Chair, and Andrew Roberts, honoring his extensive contributions to the content and quality of the Minerals and Metals & Alloys portions of the Powder Diffraction File™. Vyacheslav Baumer from State Scientific Institute for Single Crystals in the Ukraine was given the Distinguished Grantee award. Grant-in-Aid Committee Chair, Graciela de Delgado, received it in his honor.
