Abstract

This article discusses the available sources of information on the value and volume of Peru’s exports and estimates the current value of exports, the index of export prices and the quantum of exports using a wide variety of sources. By relying on several sources, I estimate the first complete series of the current value of exports for Peru for 1830-1930. Importantly, I adjust other studies’ estimates by taking into account the deficiencies of foreign sources and by distinguishing between exports of specie and of minerals. The estimations show that exports experienced substantial growth in the 1850s and 1860s, during the Guano Era. Exports stagnated in the 1870s and dropped during the War of the Pacific (1879-1883) before recovering in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially during World War I.

Figure 1

FIGURE 1 VALUE OF EXPORTS (MILLIONS OF CURRENT DOLLARS). Notes: The figure depicts three series of value of exports. These series are (a) the total value of exports (the value of the main exports plus the value of minor exports), (b) the value of the main exports and (c) the total value of exports using the alternative method for estimating export prices. For a discussion of the sources of information for the calculation of the value of exports, see the text.

FIGURE 2 VALUE OF EXPORTS (MILLIONS OF CURRENT DOLLARS). Notes: The figure depicts three series of value of exports. These series are (a) our estimations of the value of exports, (b) official value of exports, reported by the Ministerio de Hacienda y Comercio and Customs, (c) value of exports according to Rodríguez (1921a), Cisneros (1866) and Anales de la Hacienda Pública del Perú. All series are expressed in current dollars. Rodríguez, Cisneros and Anales usually do not report figures for the same year, with the exception of 1859-1860, 1863 and 1877. For those years, I report the simple average of the available figures. Cisneros reports figures for 1820, 1852, 1857, 1859-1860, 1862-1865; Rodríguez reports exports for 18311832, 1839, 1845-1848, 1851, 1853-1854, 1858-1861, 1863, 1866-1867; and Anales reports exports for 1859-1860 and 1877. For a discussion of the sources of information for the calculation of the value of exports, see the text.

FIGURE 3 INDEX OF EXPORT PRICES (1913=100). Notes: The figure depicts three indexes of export prices, using the methodologies of Fisher, Laspeyres and Paasche. I took into account the main export products for four sub-periods. Table 1 lists the goods taken into account for the construction of the index.

FIGURE 4 Index of export quantum (1913=100). Notes: The figure depicts three series of the index of export quantum. These series are (a) Our estimations of the index of export quantum, (b) the index of export quantum estimated by Hunt (1973), (c) the index of export quantum estimated by Seminario (2015). All series are expressed in indexes (1913=100). For a discussion of the sources of information, see the text.
