The petitioners sought a faculty for the replacement of the metal clock face on the church tower with a glass reinforced plastic (GRP) clock face of the same design. The Diocesan Advisory Committee did not recommend the works and Historic England objected to the proposal, although they did not become a party opponent in the case. The chancellor found that the clock face contributed to the special character of this Grade I listed church. The current metal face was not original to the eighteenth-century clock but had been replaced approximately 100 years ago. That was long enough for it to have become part of the special interest of the church and the harm caused in relation to the clock face would be very serious, as it would be lost. The GRP face would need replacing within 30–40 years and would, over time, look different from the metal face as it would not weather in the same way. The faculty was refused. [RA]
