The parish petitioned for a faculty permitting the reuse of the south-east corner of the churchyard for burials. No burials had taken place in that area for approximately 150 years and the memorials from the area had been moved to the churchyard boundary in the 1960s. Letters of objection were received from parishioners but none chose to become a party opponent in the matter. The churchyard was almost full without reuse of this area and the chancellor accepted that adjoining land currently used as a car park was still required for that purpose and was therefore not available for use for burials. The chancellor acknowledged the need to take decisions about the reuse of burial grounds with care and on due notice. He noted that the reuse of burial grounds was long established but that a suitably lengthy period of time should pass before an area should be reused. His approach was to require that a period of at least 75 years had elapsed before reuse could be considered, although each scheme should be considered on its own merits as a matter of pastoral judgement rather than strict law. In this case the lapse of time meant that there was no risk of distress being caused to the sensibilities of relatives. The chancellor granted the faculty. [RA]
