Natriuretic peptides and receptors. The natriuretic peptides, ANP, BNP, and CNP, have different interactions with the receptors for natriuretic peptides. While ANP and BNP interact mainly with NPR-A, CNP relates more to NPR-B. Note that NPR-C (as well as neutral endopeptidases) is responsible for the degradation of all natriuretic peptides. ANP: atrial natriuretic peptide; BNP: B-type natriuretic peptide; CNP: C-type natriuretic peptide; NPR-A, B, and C: natriuretic peptide receptors A, B, and C; GTP: guanosine triphosphate; cGMP: cyclic guanosine monophosphate. BNP concentration in patients with dyspnea. The bars represent the highest and lowest values of BNP measured (nanogram/liter) in patients with no evidence of congestive heart failure vs. dyspnea secondary to non-cardiac causes (but with history of LV dysfunction) and dyspnea secondary to congestive heart failure.
