The petitioners sought a confirmatory faculty authorising the retention of a nave altar measuring 33 inches high, 29 inches deep and 43 inches wide. The altar had been constructed from choir stalls which were removed during a re-ordering in 2014. The bishop had consecrated the altar at Easter 2014 and it had been in use ever since. Although there were no objections as a result of the public notices, the Diocesan Advisory Committee did not recommend the proposal for approval on the grounds that the dimensions of the altar were too small and it was of inadequate quality for a holy table.
The chancellor inspected the church and, while acknowledging that the altar was small and that the space could take a larger table, found that the introduction of a larger table was not necessary or appropriate. This altar had been used without complaint or concern for four years. The altar could not fairly be said to be of inadequate quality. Conditions were imposed that its height should be raised by the introduction of wooden blocks to the feet and that it should remain covered by a Laudian fall at all times. [RA]
