Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to highlight the processes of dehumanization currently at work in the treatment of refugees. To this end, it develops a Kantian conception of dehumanization as “juridical depersonification.” It presents two ways in which such depersonification can occur — by leaving a human being “outside the law” or by unduly treating them as an “outlaw” — and shows how they manifest on a cosmopolitan scale.
