Abstract

Abstract

A text recently discovered in the surroundings of Lepti Minus (Lamta, in the Tunisian Sahel), inscribed on the main face of a statue base, sheds substantial light on the construction of the amphitheater of the city: the context for its construction, the nature of its financing, and the identity of the benefactors who took charge of it. It consists of a public hommage paid by the populus Leptitanorum to L. Octavius Felix, a local notable, member of the equestrian order, co-opted as patron of the city. The text provides interesting information about onomastic and social considerations, the equestrian career of this local notable, L. Octavius Felix, primipilaris in the prefecture of the camp of the Legio VII Gemina in Spain, and the management of the construction of the amphitheatre.
