This chapter chronicles Rodgers’s activities before his partnership with Hammerstein, focusing on his work with lyricist Lorenz Hart. Following a painstaking pursuit of further professional work (1919–1925), weathering disappointments and developing their style, the team made their mark on Broadway (1925–1931) with musical comedies including A Connecticut Yankee and Chee-Chee and became increasingly successful. After being lured to Hollywood (1930–1934), they enjoyed success with a handful of films such as Love Me Tonight and Hallelujah, I’m a Bum but became gradually disenchanted with the studios. Their return to Broadway (1935–1943) resulted in their most durable run of classic shows, including On Your Toes, Babes in Arms, The Boys from Syracuse and Pal Joey.
