We consider free skew extensions of rings, also known as free multivariate skew polynomial rings, and explore some of the algebraic aspects of this construction. We provide different characterizations of such rings, relate them to Cohn’s construction of a filtered tensor ring on a bimodule, and present conditions under which a free skew extension of a ring is a domain, a prime ring, or can be embedded in a series ring.
