Humanity faces multiple, complex environmental challenges. Preparing students to tackle these challenges in their future careers means building diverse knowledge and skillsets, including critical thinking and communication. However, traditional learning that has largely focussed on describing concepts can often fall short in ecology. Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary (MFWS) provides experiential and interactive activities that allow students to not only learn concepts but also to apply this knowledge. Here, we outline the integration of MFWS into tertiary courses and how this has shaped learning styles and experiences. Critically, MFWS has provided students with (i) a real-world example encouraging the application of their knowledge and to think critically about the implications and feasibility of management recommendation and (ii) opportunities to interact with professionals in the field, including researchers, managers, decision-makers and science communicators. These experiences allow students to explore their professional identity and prepares them for a career in conservation.
