Summary

This chapter explores the increasingly important role of advertising in European newspapers by looking at the various ways in which the Americas were presented as a world of new opportunities. Advocates of transoceanic ventures in France, the Dutch Republic, and the Holy Roman Empire used newspapers to attract investors and settlers, but they were outperformed by the periodical press in England which helped to recruit thousands of colonists and indentured servants. This chapter connects advertising in early modern newspapers to patterns of transatlantic migration. There were multiple attempts to use the promotional qualities of the press, for settlements from as far north as Quebec to as far south as Barbados and the Guyanas. The focus will be on the campaign to develop the colony of Carolina in the years around 1650. This ultimately unsuccessful venture, despite advertisements in English and French newspapers, will be juxtaposed with the highly successful promotional campaign of William Penn in the early 1680s, which used newspapers as a way to draw attention to more elaborate treatises promising a great future for Pennsylvania.
