The Introduction situates early modern Palermo within its global context, considering how the city’s geographical and cultural entanglements contributed to its historiographical exclusion. From early modernity to modernity, it describes, conditions of globality and coloniality fueled Palermo’s marginalization – and even its racialization. Against this backdrop, Palermo’s capacity for change is conceptualized as an index of its "elasticity," an analytical paradigm intended to describe the cultural practices of mixing endemic to early modern cities remade by global empire.
