November Article of the Month
What does a truly just transition look like? In our 2026 Nevile-Plowman Award winning article, 'Transformative just transition as redistribution of income and wealth', author Karen Bell challenges conventional approaches that focus primarily on replacing jobs in carbon-intensive industries. Instead, she argues that meaningful climate action requires a far broader transformation, one that tackles the deep inequalities that shape both environmental and social outcomes. By placing the redistribution of income and wealth at the centre of the transition debate, the article offers a compelling new perspective on how sustainability and social justice are intrinsically linked. Drawing on evidence from labour, environmental and inequality research, Bell explores how policies such as progressive taxation, climate reparations and stronger labour institutions could support a more equitable and sustainable future. The article also highlights the vital role trade unions can play in driving transformative change, making it essential reading for scholars, policymakers and practitioners interested in the future of work, climate justice and economic reform.
