Acknowledgments
This book has been long in the making, and I am profoundly grateful to the advisers, colleagues, and friends who have helped give it shape. Richard Sieburth was the instigator of this project many years ago. Daniel Heller-Roazen, Michael Wood, Constanze Güthenke, and Jean-Michel Rabaté contributed to its growth in untold ways, and I remain grateful for their wise counsel and kind encouragement. At Claremont McKenna I benefited from the advice and friendship of my colleagues in the Literature Department; a conversation with Robert von Hallberg helped shape the direction the book ended up taking. My colleagues in the Classics Department at Princeton have been an extraordinary source of support and advice as I brought the project to its conclusion. I would especially like to thank Denis Feeney for reading the manuscript from start to finish and offering some helpful late-stage insights, as well as Barbara Graziosi for her unwavering support and encouragement. The two anonymous readers for Cambridge University Press provided invaluable feedback on the book, and the editorial team at the Press have seen it into print with acumen, expertise, and care; I am especially grateful to Michael Sharp for his commitment to the project. I am also grateful to staff at the Beinecke Library and the Lilly Library, as well as to Aaron M. Lisec at the Morris Library. The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation and the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation provided fellowship support early in the development of the project, and generous research leave from Princeton University and the Stanley J. Seeger ’52 Center for Hellenic Studies allowed me to bring it to completion; indeed, none of this would have been possible without the Seeger Center and its indefatigable director Dimitri Gondicas. Eirini Stergiopoulou, Lino Pertile, and Anna Bensted have been stalwart sources of love, support, and kindness, without which this book would have been much harder to write. Finally, I would like to thank Giulio Pertile, who has helped with this book in more ways than I can acknowledge, and our daughter Daphne, who has helped as well even though she has been too busy to read it so far.
