In this article, we present the Heavy Lift and Carry Exoskeleton (HeavyLC Exo), a novel design that enables its wearer to lift 18 kg (40 lbs) per arm (36 kg total) from the ground to head height and walk while carrying the load. The HeavyLC Exo has a total of 20 degrees of freedom (DOF), including 6 pneumatically actuated DOF and 14 unactuated DOF. Each arm uses only two actuators, powering elevation and retraction/extension. Each leg uses a single extension actuator that spans from the foot to the wearer’s waist, simplifying both the design and control of the system. This design does require the user to provide some hip torque since the exoskeleton hip joint is unactuated in the sagittal plane. We analyze this leg architecture and find the required user hip torque as a function of the position of the top of the leg actuators. The leg design also includes a novel unidirectional spring at the hip that generates torque during leg adduction, reducing the torques the user must generate in the frontal plane. We characterize the exoskeleton’s pneumatic control system and demonstrate its performance during lifting and walking. The exoskeleton requires forces of 2–40 N at the tool handle, depending on the load mass, representing an average force amplification of 20:1.
